MLC Acacia students meet and greet turkeys and poults, seniors can turkey meat at MCC meat canning
Friday morning, November 14, was a morning for the birds – in this case, turkeys – for students at Mountain Lake Christian (MLC), from primary grades to senior class. Both age groups of students experienced turkeys in two new (and very different) ways.
A field trip to the Jon and Brenda Adrian turkey barns in rural Mountain Lake was the destination for MLC Acacia students (grades one and two). After observing the BIG turkeys, the students donned clear plastic “boots” and stepped into a barn filled with baby turkeys (poults) – which each of the students eagerly cared for. Jon Adrian explained to them the important 24-hour-a-day responsibilities involved in raising turkeys – feeding, watering, keeping them warm, and on and on.
At the other end of the spectrum, MLC’s senior class spent four hours working on a service project at MCC’s (Mennonite Central Committee) annual meat canning event held at the Elmendorf Hutterite Colony in rural Mountain Lake. MCC volunteers can meat – yes, in this case it was turkey meat – to be sent to hungry people around the world. The countries which received the largest MCC shipments last year were North Korea, Burundi and Haiti. The goal of the meat canning was 5,500 cans of meat.
