A private family service will be held at a later date for 89-year-old Wayne Starr of Battle Lake, Minnesota. Wayne passed away on Friday, July 11, 2014, at Sanford Palliative Care in Fargo, North Dakota.
He was born on December 29, 1924, in Windom, Minnesota, the son of Ralph and Asenath (Vader) Starr. Wayne grew up and attended school in Windom and Mountain Lake, Minnesota.
In June 1943, Wayne entered the United States Army. He spent time in California and the Southwest Pacific and was in the invasion of Luzon, Philippines in the Pacific Theater of World War II. He received the Silver Star Medal and two Purple Hearts with Oak Leaf Cluster. He was honorably discharged in 1946.
On May 22, 1949, he married Vera Feil in Windom. To that union two children were born, Cheryl and Mark. Wayne and Vera were blessed to just have had their 65th wedding anniversary on May 22, 2014.
In his early years, Wayne hauled gravel, worked in filling stations, sold fuel oil and worked for Olin Company in the fiber division for 15 years before retiring in 1983 as a buyer/supervisor. He was a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Fergus Falls, Minnesota and the American Legion and VFW in Mountain Lake. He enjoyed the outdoors, lawn work, gardening, hunting and fishing.
Preceding him in death were his parents; brothers; Robert (Donnabell) and Bill; a sister, Leona; and a brother-in-law, Bob Zwolinski.
Survivors include his wife, Vera of Battle Lake; children, C. Starr (Steven) Morrill of rural Battle Lake and Mark (Susan) Starr of Long Beach, California; three grandchildren, Ali, Dustin, and Bridget; sister, Leta Zwolinski of San Diego, California and sister-in-law, Joyce Starr of Santa Maria, California.
