The Cottonwood County Sheriff’s Office had responded to 218 South Courthouse Avenue in Jeffers at 9:14 p.m. on Saturday, July 5, for a report of a man being stabbed. According to the criminal complaint, law enforcement officials noted that the victim, a neighbor to Hanson, had a large cut on his right ankle and was bleeding profusely. After beginning to give medical assistance, it was also observed that he had a stab wound on the left side of his back near his lungs and another just above his kidney area. He was taken by Jeffers First Responders to Windom Area Hospital, and was later flown to a Sioux Falls, South Dakota hospital due to the severity of his injuries and is in critical condition. He has not yet been identified.

Court documents state that officers went to Hanson’s residence to question him, but he resisted, barricading himself in his house and later appearing with items in his hands that appeared to be a propane torch and a homemade bomb.

A perimeter was set around the residence, but eventually Hanson was talked out of the house and taken into custody without incident. An executed search warrant for Hanson’s residence on Sunday, July 6 turned up a six-inch bladed knife, a propane torch and a homemade bomb, according to court documents.
