MLA Track & Field relay teams parade oval talents at Howard Wood
The 89th running of the Howard Wood Dakota Relays was held Friday, May 2 and Saturday, May 3, at Howard Wood Field in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. More than 300 middle school, high school, college and university student athletes competed in events. Over the years it has become one of South Dakota’s premier athletic events. High school teams came from South Dakota, Minnesota, North Dakota, Iowa and Nebraska. The Mountain Lake Area (MLA) Track & Field team fielded relay teams in Saturday’s high school competition.
The boys 4 x 400 finished second, clocking 3:32.09. Relay team members include Jose Gonzalez, Cody Klassen, Caleb Bargen and Jared Saunders. Each team member ran a 400-meter dash (or one lap around the track).
The girls 4 x 400 had equal success, earning third with their 4:17.44, and the girls sprint medley relay was sixth with a time of 4:53.27. Relay team members for both races are Mikayla Falk, Whitney Klassen, Lydia Hildebrandt and Brianna Soutthivong. As in the boys 4 x 4, each girl ran a 400, while in the sprint medley, Falk and Soutthivong each ran 200 meters, Hildebrandt, 400 and Klassen, 800 meters.
