Four MLA players score in double digits
The Mountain Lake Area (MLA) Wolverine boys basketball team held a three-point 35 to 32 lead at halftime of their Monday night (January 15) non-conference contest at St. James, but were clipped from the win in the second half by the Saints, losing 75 to 79.
Four MLA players did score in double digits, junior Regan Syverson leading the way with 19 points. Others hitting for double numbers included junior Drake Harder with 15, senior Weston Osland scoring 14 and sophomore Spencer Khamvongsa tallying 11. Sophomore Sam Paulson chipped in eight, with senior A. J. Vongsy adding six and sophomore Abraham Stoesz scoring two.
The Wolverines shot 41% from the floor on the night (29 of 70), including 7 of 21 behind the arc (33%). From the three throw line, MLA shooters were 10 of 17 (58%).
Harder had 19 of the team’s 43 rebounds, seven on the offensive boards and 12 on defense. Paulson claimed nine, Vongsy five, Syverson a quartet, Stoesz three, Osland two and Khamvongsa one. As a team, MLA had 43 rebounds (14 offensive, 29 defensive).
Of the squad’s 15 assists, Osland dished out four and Khamvongsa, Vongsy and Stoesz had three each.
Vongsy nabbed four steals, and Harder, four out of the club’s eight on the night.
The Wolverines’ season record is 9-5; 5-2 in the Red Rock Conference.
Tonight (Tuesday, January 16), MLA will host a girls/boys doubleheader with Windom. The girls’ game will start at 6 p.m., with the boys’ tip-off scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
Prior to the games, the Mountain Lake Public High School (MLPS) Music Department will be holding a fundraising supper. The menu will include pulled pork sandwiches, chips, cookies and a drink, served in the MLPS cafeteria from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Pulled pork will also be available by purchased by the pint or quart to be taken home. Monies raised will be used for the Senior High Band and Choir trip.
