Possible by nine individual match wins
Windom/Mountain Lake (W/ML) Cobra wrestlers head to the Section 3A semi-finals in Pipestone on Saturday, February 18 after downing St. James Area in a meet at Windom on Thursday, February 16, 38 to 24.
The Cobras won seven of the first eight weight classes against the Saints, including falls recorded by Alex Borsgard (132 pounds), Josh Samdal (138) and Jabari Carlton (195). Brett Willaby won with a technical fall at 106. Other wins were by Hunter Ekstrom at 113 with an 11-10 decision, Zach Spinks in OT at 126, Evan Wiens at 145 on a 12-6 decision, Yanick Tade at 152 with a 3-2 decision and at 160, Jesse Jepsen with a 9-2 decision.
On Saturday at Pipestone, beginning at 12:30 p.m., two mats will go simultaneously. The third-seeded Cobras will face Minneota, the section’s #2 seed, while the #1-seed, Pipestone Area, will wrestly Canby.
The finals are set for 2:30 p.m., with the winning team advancing to the Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL) Class A Wrestling Tournament. The team and individual state tourney will run from Thursday, March 2 through Saturday, March 4, at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.
Adrian opened Thursday’s team matches with a 57-9 win over Madelia/Truman/Martin Luther. But in the quarterfinals, Pipestone Area beat Adrian 68-10 and Canby came from behind for a 36-33 win over Jackson County Central (JCC). In the other quarter-final on Thursday, Minneota moved on to wrestle W/ML by downing Bird Island/Lake Lillian/Olivia/Danube (BOLD), 72 to 6.
