Yesterday (Tuesday, July 26), the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA), in promoting environmental compliance, issued penalties in 44 cases in 32 counties across Minnesota during April, May and June (the second quarter of 2016), reported Worthington’s Daily Globe. Penalties in all of the cases totaled above $480,000.

Two of those cited were area businesses. POET Biorefining in Bingham Lake and Minnesota Soybean Processors of Brewster, who each fined $4,400 for air quality violations.

Environmental enforcement investigations often take several months, and although they can involve the courts, they are most often negotiated settlements. To that end, the goal is for the business to comply with environmental rules. The fines leveled equal the environmental harm, economic advantage gained or any environmental corrective actions.
