MLC Speech successful at Pipestone; as a team and individually

Five-member team pulls second in Small Schools, two are first in their categories

It turned out to be quite a successful Pipestone Arrow Speech Tourney for the Mountain Lake Christian (MLC) Speech Team this past Saturday, February 15.

The five-member team claimed the second-place Small Schools trophy, along with all participating competitors breaking finals. Elijah Stoesz earned the gold in Informative Speaking, while Melissa Lohrenz finished on top in Poetry. In Humorous Interpretation, Josh Raabe claimed the silver, and Danica Dick was awarded the bronze in Storytelling. Caitlin Smith, who double-entered, was sixth in Prose and finished two out from finals in Great Speeches. There were 16 teams competing at the event. The team’s coach is Kim Friesen. Chaperones at the tournament included Scott Smith, Nordis Olson and Rachel Knutson.

This coming Sunday, February 23, the MLC Speech Team will celebrate their efforts with a “Speech is a Sweet Treat” afternoon fund-raising event, running from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. in the school’s new music rooms. Admission is $10, payable at the door. In addition to hearing the students’ speech, those attending will be able to enjoy a popcorn and candy buffet.
