The Mountain Lake Area (MLA) Wolverine boys basketball team of Head Coach Shawn Naas were given the top seed in the South Subsection of Section 2A when the seeding brackets were released Wednesday morning, February 12. MLA, at 19-2, are followed by United South Central (18-4), St. Clair (also 18-4) and Mankato Loyola (12-9).
The Wolverines will host the winner of a Thursday, February 20 play-in game between #9 Madelia (7-15) and Southwest United (11-8) in the subsection quarterfinal game on Tuesday, February 25. Meanwhile, USC awaits the winner of #10 Alden-Conger (4-17) and Truman/Martin Luther-Northrop (10-12). St. Clair will host #6 Granada-Huntley-East Chain (7-11) on February 25. Mankato Loyola will play at home against #5 Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton (9-13) on February 25.
In the section’s North Subsection playoffs, #9 Sleepy Eye (7-16) plays at #8 Nicollet (9-11) on February 20, the winner traveling to Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City, the #1 seed, on February 25. Minnesota Valley Lutheran-New Ulm (9-13), the #6 seed, will host #11 Cleveland (6-15) on February 20, with the winner facing Sleepy Eye Saint Mary’s (13-7) on February 25. In the other quarterfinals on February 25, #4 Springfield (9-10) will host #5 Cedar Mountain-Comfrey (10-11)
Section 3AA, South Subsection match-ups
Tournament play for the Section 3AA, South Subsection boys begins Saturday, February 22. Fairmont, at 20-3, is the #1 seed and will host Luverne (4-19) Meanwhile, St. James Area (16-5) is ranked #2 and will host Windom Area (7-14). The number-three seed, Jackson County Central (14-8) will host #6 Martin County West (11-9), while #5 Blue Earth Area (9-12) will play at #4 Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial (14-8).
