MLA Wolverine girls basketball tops JWP in Section 2A South Subsection

Team to play Heron Lake-Okabena at Okabena on Monday

The Mountain Lake Area (MLA) Wolverine girls basketball team opened Section 2A South Subsection tournament play with a first-round win over Janesville/Waldorf/Pemberton (JWP) at Janesville on Thursday, February 26. The girls, coached by Wayne Klassen, assisted by Dave Bucklin, with volunteer coaches Amber Hughes and Kyle Blomgren, topped the Bulldogs 64-49 to advance in tourney play.

Junior Signey Stoesz had 21 points and eight rebounds for the Wolverines, with another junior, Chanah Brandt, scoring 14 complemented by five steals. Senior Lydia Hildebrandt added 13 points.

Leading the Bulldogs in scoring was Hannah Olson with 20 points, while Kennedy Strauss scored 15.

The 10th-seeded Wolverines advance to a Monday night, March 2 face-off with the Red Rock Conference Champion Wildcats of Heron Lake-Okabena, the second-seed, at Okabena, tip-off at 7 p.m.
