It was a “claws up” kind of game in the Mountain Lake Public High School auditorium last night (Tuesday, December 19), the Mountain Lake Area (MLA) Wolverine boys basketball squad rolling by guest Madelia by 37 in a non-conference contest, 86 to 49.

The Maroon-and-Silver were in charge after the first half with accumulating a 22-point cushion, 47 to 25.

Two Wolverines scored in double figures, Marcus Boyd tallying 28 and Drake Harder, 14. A string of MLA players added to the point total as well: Spencer Khamvongsa (9), Brodie Freeman (8), Regan Syverson and Abraham Stoesz (6), David Larson (5), Travis Willaby and AJ Vongsy (4) and Sam Paulson (2).

The Wolverines shot 52% from the floor (39 of 74), including 6-of-18 (33%) from three-point land. For the game, MLA had only three free throw attempts, collecting on two (66%).

Madelia struggled with their shots, good on only 35% (21 of 60), and 4-of-20 (20%) from three-point range. On six free throw attempts, Madelia hit on three for 50%.

MLA dominated the boards, pulling down 50 rebounds to their guest’s 21. Twenty came under their own basket, with 30 on defense. Harder had 11 of those grabs, with Boyd and Syverson each with seven; Freeman, five; Stoesz, four and Willaby, three. Khamvongsa, Larson, Vongsy, Paulson and Reynaldo Capetillo each nabbed a pair of rebounds, and Osland had one.

In floor play, the Wolverines had 24 assists, Stoesz leading the offensive attack with 10. They also recorded six steals and six blocked shots.

MLA did commit 22 turnovers to Madelia’s 21.

Next action will be at Slayton on Thursday, December 21, to face Murray County Central (MCC).

Off until after Christmas, the boys will host Tri-City United (TCU) of Montgomery on Wednesday, December 27, tip-off at 6 p.m, during the 2017 MLA Holiday Tournament. Prior to the start of the game, the Mountain Lake Area (MLA) Wolverine boys basketball team from 2012-2013 will be saluted.
