Carter Kirk of Mountain Lake reaches 1,000 career points for Mustangs

SMSU senior scores career-high 23 en route to college scoring milestone

Carter Kirk, a senior at Southwest Minnesota State University (SMSU), scored a career-high 23 points – and grabbed a career-high 18 rebounds – to lead the Mustangs to an 86-65 win over Wayne State College of Wayne, Nebraska, in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) men’s basketball this afternoon (Sunday, December 31) at the R/A Facility in Marshall.

En route, Kirk, a 2014 graduate of Mountain Lake Public High School and son of Tim and Sheila Kirk, also reached his 1,000 career-point mark at 15:23 of the first half, becoming the 23rd player in team history to reach the milestone.

With the win, SMSU improves to 10-4 overall, 6-2 in the NSIC. It was also the Mustang’s 19th straight home win over Wayne State in the R/A Facility.

Wayne State drops to 9-7 overall, 4-4- in the NSIC.

SMSU shot 53% (31 of 59) from the field, including 9 of 17 from three-point range. The Mustangs also dominated on the glass with a 44 to 26 rebound advantage.

Next weekend, SMSU hits the road to face Winona State University on Friday, January 5 and Upper Iowa on Saturday, January 6.
