Lester suddenly became ill on Monday, September 11, 2017 at his home in Windom and was taken to the Windom Area Hospital. He was transferred to the Sanford Medical Center in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, where he passed away on Tuesday, September 12, 2017.
Lester “Les” Evers was born on April 12, 1932, near Comfrey, Minnesota in Selma Township, Cottonwood County, Minnesota, the son of the late Bert and Aleide (Junker) Evers and received his education in the Comfrey area.
On June 15, 1952, Lester was united in marriage to Helen Stenke in Mountain Lake, Minnesota. After marriage, they farmed in the Comfrey and Mountain Lake areas before buying a farm in Delafield Township in rural Windom in 1959, where they currently were living.
They were longtime members of the Delafield Lutheran Church until its closing. Then they became members of the American Lutheran Church in Windom.
Lester was a graduate of Reisch School of Auctioneering in 1972 and was inducted into the Minnesota Auctioneers Hall of Fame in 2002. He was a longtime auctioneer for Cottonwood and Jackson County 4-H livestock auctions and received the “Friend of 4-H” award. For 20 years, he was the auctioneer for the Shetek Conference Quilt Auction.
Lester also was a longtime member of the Windom Chamber of Commerce where he received the Volunteer of the Year award in 1994 and a member of the CB Club.
Lester will be remembered for his love of auctioneering, fishing, camping, dancing – especially polkas – playing cards, coffee with friends, wintering in Arizona and playing Santa Claus for family and friends for many years. But most of all, he loved his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Lester is survived by his wife of 65 years, Helen Evers of Windom; four children, Dale (Kay) Evers of Windom; Nancy (Charley) Evers-Mathiowetz of Hector, Minnesota; Randy (Kay) Evers of Brooklyn Park, Minnesota and Mark Evers of Walnut Grove, Minnesota; eight grandchildren, Danielle and Ryan Evers, Andrew (Rhea) Mathiowetz, Sarah Mathiowetz, Jeremy (Jen) Evers, Jason (Christina) Evers, Kristina (Troy) Michaud and Barrett Evers; nine great-grandchildren, Mason and Maxwell Mathiowetz, Blake, Logan and Gavin Evers, Tyler and Nolan Evers, Makayla and Alyssa Michaud; three siblings, Lucille (Wayne) Bennett, Arlene (Earl) Karshnik and Larry (Terry) Evers and many nieces and nephews.
Lester is preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Lori Kaye Evers and one sister, Ruth Bernloehr.
