Mountain Lake Dog Park Committee to hold fundraiser
The Mountain Lake Dog Park in Memory of Alyssa Committee will be holding its 1st Annual Hot Dog Lunch and Walk on Sunday, May 7, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., at Lawcon Park. The menu will feature – of course – hot dogs, baked beans, chips and bottled water for the suggested price of $5.50. Once done with the meal, those attending will take their beloved pooches on a relaxing walk by Mountain Lake on the lake trail.
About the proposed dog park
Members of a volunteer committee spearheading the creation of a doug park in Mountain Lake, led by Emily Bentson and Jason Kruser, first presented their plans to the Mountain Lake City Council at its Tuesday, December 20, 2016 meeting. They distributed a hand-out, including a map, to the council. At that time, council members gave the committee the green light to move forward.
Since that time, the committee has been organizing, setting a budget and solidifying plans to raise the needed funds – no city funds will be used. Included in the plans will be the installation of a fence, benches and other amenities. They also intend to hold annual fundraising events for on-going dog park needs.
The proposed dog park location is an area to the west of Lawcon Park and to the north of Island View Campground and Prince Street. Proposed fenced-in dimensions are 176′ long by 117′ wide, located inside the tree line to the west, and 84′ west of the last white fence post of Lawcon Park. The total space would be 20,000 square feet, or ½ acre.
The committee has been providing regular updates to the council as the project and fundraising move forward.

Dog park to be named in memory of Alyssa (Radtke) Winters
The committee has elected to name the new park for canines Mountain Lake Dog Park in Memory of Alyssa, in order to honor the life of the late 35-year-old Alyssa Sue (Radtke) Winters, and her unborn daughter, Sutton Valysa. Alyssa was a native of Mountain Lake, graduating from Mountain Lake Public High School in 1998. She was the daughter of Lyle and Pam Radtke. The mother and daughter died unexpectedly late Saturday morning, December 27, 2014, at Mayo Clinic Health System-Rochester following a motor vehicle accident in Blue Earth County that morning. Winters was on her way at tht time to celebrate Christmas with family in Mountain Lake.
Alyssa was very involved with Save-A-Bull Pit Bull Rescue for five years prior to her death. Her interestin helping pit bulls was evident in her own pit bull, Walley. Alyssa flew to Tennesse in 2009 to rescue Walley. Walley, who was in the car at the time of the collision survived the crash.
