Willaby section champ at 106, Borsgard true second at 132; Both on to state
A pair of Windom/Mountain Lake (W/ML) Cobra wrestlers will take their individual talents to the mats at the Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL) State Class A Wrestling Tournament later this week after earning the berths during this past weekend’s Section 3A Individual Wrestling Tourney held at Jackson County Central.
In the championship match-up at 106 pounds, the Cobras’ Brett Willaby won in a 14-6 major decision over Pipestone’s Grant Budden to claim the title.
The second W/ML wrestler to gain a spot on the big stage was Alex Borsgard with a true second win at 132 pounds. In the final match at 132, Borsgard lost to Brendan Reiss of Minneota, 5-2, but came back in a true second match in the weight class to pin Zach Poelaert of JCC to claim the second-place red.
The Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL) Wrestling Tournament – team and individual – will run from Thursday, March 2 through Saturday, March 4, at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.
Nine other Cobra wrestlers performed to a spot on the medal stand – including six who finished in third –
+ 113 – Kade Sammons won 8-2 over Kalib Greenman of Canby for third-place.
+ 120 – Hunter Ekstrom lost 8-7 in a fifth-place match-up to finish sixth.
+ 126 – Zach Spinks decisioned Blake Reiss of Minneota 3-1 in overtime for third.
+ 137 – Evan Wiens pinned Emerson Winter of Pipestone in 3:21 for third-place.
+ 145 – Yanick Tade won with a 10-2 major decision of Tallin Johnson of St. James for third.
+ 160 – Jesse Jepsen finished fifth with 7-4 win.
+ 183 – Jacob Suess pinned Steven Czech of Pipestone in third-place match to finish third.
+ 195 – In a match for true second, Jabari Carlton of W/ML was pinned by Evan Stoks of Canby in the third period to finish third. Stoks had lost to Gybert of Adrian 9-2 in the final. Carlton had earlier pinned Vanderwal of Pipestone in the third-place match, but went on to wrestle for true second as he had not faced either finalist.
+ 220 – Eli Mutz was sixth, losing in the match for fifth-place, 10-0.
