It was a valiant effort by Head Coach Tim Kirk’s (assisted by Nate Brinkman and Tim Snyder) Mountain Lake Area (MLA) Wolverine football team, but the Maroon-and-Silver fell short – 47-14 – to Hills/Beaver Creek (H/BC) at Hills in Section 3 9-Man football play-off this afternoon (Saturday, October 29).

The host team scored on the first play of the game, with running back Isaiah Vis taking the ball 80 yards for the TD. The PAT kick was good; H/BC in front 7-0.

With 8:18 remaining in the first quarter, MLA’s senior quarter Levi Stoesz hit sophomore Zach Spinks for a touchdown to get on the board. The two-point conversion failed, but the Wolverines had clawed back into contention, now behind by one point, 7-6.

Four minutes later, Zach Scholten, H/BC’s quarterback, ran the ball into the end zone from one yard out; kick was good and H/BC held a 14-6 margin.

The Patriots scored twice in the second quarter – running back Trenton Bass rolling 38 yards for the TD (20-6) and Scholten punching it in from five yards out (26-6).

In the second half, the Wolverines put a second touchdown on the scoreboard, Stoesz connecting with junior Kris Menken with a four-yard pass. The two-point conversion was a success. H/BC in front by just 12 points, 26-14.

Unfortunately, the MLA offense was not able to generate any additional scoring, the Patriots adding three touchdowns in the final quarter. With 11:05 left in the game, Scholten tossed a three-yard pass to his wide receiver, Jed Burgers to give H/BC with a 20-point cushion, 34-14. With 10:28 remaining, Bass ran 38 yards for a TD (40-14) and the final score of the game was a Scholten 10-yard pass to Kyle Kueter (47-14).

The Patriots – the section’s number two seed – will face #1-seed Edgerton/Ellsworth (E/E) at Southwest Minnesota State University-Marshall on Thursday, November 3, with kick-off at 7 p.m. E/E dropped Fulda in another Saturday afternoon game, 50-7.
