Windom police officer injured in Thursday morning crash

Three vehicles involved: Ford Crown Victoria, Ford F-250 with trailer, Freightliner tractor

THREE VEHICLES WERE involved in a crash on Minnesota State Highway 60, west of Bingham Lake, on Thursday morning, September 1. Vehicles and individuals involved included, from left, a Windom Police Department squad car, driven by Kevin Patterson; a white 2000 Ford F-250, driven by Larry Ober of Rushmore, and, behind a Minnesota State Patrol vehicle and a tow truck, a 2012 Freightliner tractor, driven by Steven Schroeder of Coon Rapids. All men received non-life-threatening injuries, with Patterson hospitalized in Mayo Clinic Health System-Mankato and Ober and Schroeder taken to Windom Area Hospital.

 

 

 

Fifty-three-year-old Kevin L. Patterson, a longtime officer serving with the Windom Police Department received non-life-threatening injuries, and is hospitalized in Mayo Clinic Health System-Mankato, following a three-vehicle incident that occurred at 10:22 a.m. on Thursday morning, September 1, on Minnesota State Highway 60 just west of Bingham Lake.

According to a report by the Minnesota State Patrol (MSP), Officer Patterson was in his 2011 Ford Crown Victoria squad car on the side of the road, with lights activated, when a 2000 Ford F-250, driven by 42-year-old Larry K. Ober of Rushmore, and towing a trailer, traveling in the eastbound lane, collided head-on with a 2012 Freightliner tractor, driven by Steven M. Schroeder, 55, of Coon Rapids, traveling in the westbound lane. The pickup then struck the squad car, sending the car into the westbound ditch and causing it to catch fire.

Ober and Schroeder both also received non-life-threatening injuries and were taken to Windom Area Hospital.

All three vehicle were considered totaled.

Assisting the MSP at the scene were the Cottonwood County Sheriff’s Office, Windom Police Department, Windom Fire Department and Windom Ambulance Squad.

The Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) reported that Highway 60 was closed for a period of time, with traffic diverted until clean-up was completed.
