Victim identified as man from Brookings, South Dakota
According to a report on KNUJ radio of New Ulm, taken from a news release from the Brown County Sheriff’s Office, the department is investigating a drowning reported Saturday afternoon, July 9, at Mound Creek Park, located about nine miles west of Comfrey, in the southwestern part of the county.
Authorities say a 23-year-old swimmer was reported missing approximately at 2:40 p.m. Saturday afternoon, and was located around 4:12 p.m. by members of the Brown County Sheriff’s Office, searching by boat.
The victim was removed from the water and medical first responders and ambulance staff began rescue efforts. However, he did not survive.
The victim is identified as Assaf Hussain Alharbi of Brookings, South Dakota, reportedly an exchange student from Saudi Arabia.
Members of the Sanborn First Responders, Springfield Ambulance Squad, Minnesota State Patrol, Cottonwood County Sheriff’s Office, Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR), North Memorial Life Link Helicopter, and the Blue Earth County Sheriff’s Department’s Dive Rescue Team all assisted the Brown County Sheriff’s Office at the scene.
