Windom/Mountain Lake (W/ML) Cobra Youth Wrestlers were away at the 2016 NYWA (Northland Youth Wrestling Association) State Tournament and State Invite. The competitions were held from Thursday, March 31 to Sunday, April 3, in the Mayo Civic Center in Rochester.

Below are the results of those W/ML Youth Cobra Wrestlers competing:

2016 NYWA State Tournament

+ Brett Willaby – 7/8 Grade Champion at 95 pounds. Willaby, an eighth-grader in his final year of youth wrestling eligibility, went 4-0 en route to his title. In the championship match, he downed Will Magaard of Kerkhoven/Murdock/Sunburg in a 3-0 decision. He opened the tourney with a 12-2 win over Klayton Hawkins of Washburn-Kellogg. In his next match, Brett dropped Owen Werner of Perham, 6-2. Brett defeated Waconia’s Riese White 5-0 in the semi-final match.

+ Kade Sammons – Wrestled at the 110-pound weight at 7/8 Grade. Kade won his opening match over Tucker Peterson of Brainerd/Pillager, 7-2, but then lost his next to matches by falls to Gabe Nagel of Little Falls and Trevon Johnson of UNITED.

+ Thavien (Tido) Xayachak – Wrestled at 70 pounds in Grades 5/6. Thavien lost in his opening found by fall to Christian Noble of Big Lake. Thavien bounced back to pin Chase Nelson of Elk River before dropping a 4-0 decision to Gage Cyphers of Fairmont/Martin County West Red Bull.

+ Kaden Haberman – Wrestled in Grades 5/6 at 155 pounds, losing in his opening match to Isaiah Brown of Rogers by a 5-3 decision. In his next match, Kaden was pinned by LARP’s Jacob Meyer.

+ Hunter Konz – Wrestled in Grades 3/4 in the 95-pound weight class. Hunter was pinned in his opening match by Mason Carrier of Detroit Lakes. In his second match, Hunter won by a bye, and then lost by fall to Ian Englund of Byron.

+ Ethan Schleicher – Wrestled at 110 pounds in Grades 3/4, losing by fall to Brady Pekarek of Royalton-Upsala. Ethan had a bye in his next match, but then was pinned by Sonnie DeHeer of FCLMC.

+ Ian Richardson – Earned Fifth-Place in the 130-pound weight class for Grades 1/2 by pinning Kayden Parson of Bemidji. In his opening match, Ian won by pin over Chance Johnson of ANML, and then won by a 3-2 double overtime decision over Noah Orth of St. Cloud Tech. In his next matches, he was pinned by George Doherty of LeSueur/Henderson and Connor Newhouse of Elk River before rebounding to take Fifth Place.

 

2016 NYWA State Invite

+ Keith Swenson – Wrestled at 125 pounds in Grades 7/8. A seventh-grader, Keith Swenson lost to Faribault eighth-grader Bryce Nolen in the first round. Keith had a bye in his next match, and then lost a 1-0 decision to Brainderd/Pillager seventh-grader Caleb Kramer.

+ Trenton Renquist – Finished in fourth-place in the Grades 7/8A 105-pound weight class. Despite dropping his opening match 1-0 to Cade Sixberry (the eventual champion), an eighth-grader from Big Lake, Trenton, a seventh-grader, went on to defeat Anthony Vettel, a seventh-grader from Waconia, 1-0, as well as Carter Jonsgaard, a LARP seventh-grader, 12-11, before losing to DGF seventh-grader Azner Jenson, 8-4.

+ Micah Holmberg – A sixth-grader, Micah finished third in the 88-pound weight class in Grades 5/6B. He won his opening round match, downing BHV fifth-grader Deagen Captain 9-0 before losing to Faribault sixth-grader Aiden Tobin, 6-0. Micah came back to win two more matches to claim third – defeating Tyson Ricker, a fifth-grade student from Becker by fall and Deagen Captain by a score of 10-1.

+ Caden Swoboda – Caden, a sixth-grader, made it to the championship round in the Grades 5/6A 80-pound class, losing by fall to Levi Jacobson, a sixth-grader from Foley, earning a silver second-place medal. En route to this championship title tilt, Caden won a 2-0 decision over Waconia fifth-grader Alexander Riley and a 3-0 win over Tucker Ginther, a fifth-grader from Caledonia/Houston.

+ Damion Pohlman – A fifth-grader, Damion lost his first match in the Grades 5/6B 70-pound weight class to Medford fifth-grader Alex Helgeson, 13-2. He went on to defeat Easton Miller, a Brainderd/Pillager fifth-grader in Round 2, 9-5 before losing to EVW sixth-grader Teagyn Ludwig by fall.

+ Jared Hunter – Wrestling at 65 pounds in Grades 5/6, Jared lost in the first round by fall to Devan Andrist, a K-M sixth-grader. He then dropped a 2-1 match to Connor Carlson, a fifth-grader from Kimball.

+ Kole Haberman – Competing at 80 pounds in Grades 3/4A, Kole, a third grader, dropped his opening round by fall to Cody Krull, a GMLOKS fourth-grader. In his next match, he was defeated by LeSueur fourth-grader Jaden Kelly by fall.

+ Tucker Renquist –  A fourth-grader wrestling at 68 pounds in Grades 3/4A, Tucker wrestled his way to the title match, losing to Ben Carrier, a Chatfield third-grader, by technical fall – but did earn the second-place silver. On his way to that title match, Tucker defeated Tanner Ginther, a third-grader from Caledonia/Houston, by a 7-2 decision as well as Brandon Michel a New Prague fourth-grader, 2-0.

+ Phoukhanh (Preston) Xayachak – Wrestled to the championship gold in the 55-pound weight class for Grades 3/4, defeating Hutchinson third-grader Logan Schwanz, 4-3. In his first match, the fourth-grader downed Matthew Contreras, a Crookston third-grader, 2-0 and then won by technical fall over Stewartville fourth-grader Quade Mullenbach.
