Set to face GHEC-T on Thursday
The final 10 seconds of the Section 2A South game in Wells on Saturday night, February 27, proved to be exhilarating for the Mountain Lake Area (MLA) Varsity Girls Basketball squad – and a sweat fest for its fans – with all Wolverines savored the sweet thrill of victory as the final buzzer sounded. That is because the South’s #6-seeded MLA team (15-8) had rallied to come up with five points as the clock ticked down to take a three-point win over the #3-seeded United South Central (USC) Rebels (16-7), 40 to 37, to advance in tourney bracket play.
A tres by eighth-grade guard Margo Stoesz with just 10 seconds remaining – followed by a pair of three throws from the line by her senior sister, Wolverine guard Signey Stoesz with just seven ticks remaining, lifted MLA to the win. At the end of the first half, the Wolverines were down by just a bucket, 18-16, in the hard-fought game.
Signey Stoesz tallied 18 points in the win, with junior guard Brook Sunderman chipping in nine.
Also on Saturday, Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Truman (GHEC/T (19-4), downed #7-seed Springfield (10-16) by 16 – 58 to 42.
The Wolverines go on to face the South’s #2-seed (GHEC/T) on Thursday, March 3, at Lake Crystal/Wellcome Memorial High School in Lake Crystal, with tip-off at 7:45 p.m.
The #1-seed in Section 2A South is Mankato Loyola (20-4). They will face the #4-seed St. Clair (18-8) in the other South semi-final, held at 6 p.m., also at Lake Crystal.
