Lydia Hildebrandt first in 100-meter, second in 200-meter; Saunders, Bargen, Tanyavong, Capetillo 4 x 100 run second
Lydia Hildebrandt will represent the Mountain Lake Area (MLA) Wolverines girls track-and-field team at the state meet in a pair of events. Channeling her familial track-and-field genes (plus adding a lot of her own hard work on the track and in the weight room), she topped the field in the 100-meter dash with 12.65 seconds, and finished second in the 200-meter dash with 26.23. Also advancing in the 100-meter second-place spot was Erin Orred of Cedar Mountain/Comfrey with 12.72. Winning the 200-meter was Luverne’s Tayla Peterson with 25.99.
The state meet oval is quite familiar to Hildebrandt. She made it in the 400-meter dash and the 4 x 400-meter relay as a junior and in the 4 x 200-meter relay her sophomore year.
On the boys side, a second-place finish in the 4 x 100 relay earned the quartet of Jared Saunders, Caleb Bargen, Hamlet Tanyavong and Reynaldo Capetillo a state berth. They ran to a time of 44.85 seconds, just .13 behind the winning relay team from Redwood Valley and their 44.72.
Saunders and Bargen are 1/2 of the 4 x 100 that also ran in the 2014 state meet.
The five from MLA will be running in their respective Class A events during the state meet, slated for Friday, June 5 and Saturday, June 6, at Hamline University in St.Paul. Hildebrandt, Saunders and Tanyavong are recent graduates of Mountain Lake Public High School (MLHS) and Bargen of Mountain Lake Christian, while Capetillo just completed his freshman year at MLHS.
Team Head Coach is Paul Metcalf, with Assistant Coaches Scott Boelke, Matt Anderson and Brian Oeltjenbruns.
