Planting for the future

Trees that will some day shade elementary playground

On Tuesday afternoon, May 12, four grades of students from Mountain Lake Public Elementary School (MLES), along with Dave Bucklin of the Cottonwood County Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) and four members of the Kilen Woods group from the Minnesota Conservation Corps, planting four trees scattered around the elementary playground – trees that some day will provide shade for students.

Grades six, four, three and five all took part in the tree planting – placing two hackberry trees on the northwest corner of the tennis courts and two honeylocust trees on the southwest corner of the courts.

A couple of the grades additionally “planted” time capsules along with the trees – containers that included information about the students, the school and current times.

The Conservation Corps and Bucklin of the Cottonwood SWCD have been in Mountain Lake planting trees the past two days. The plantings are an investment in the future by the City of Mountain Lake.

Below is a photo gallery of a couple of the tree plantings:

BUCKLIN PLACES LOOSE dirt around the base of the potted tree – a honeylocust. He then pressed down the dirt around the tree, added mulch and watered the new planting. Also planting a honeylocust was the fifth-grade class. Both of these trees are located southwest of the tennis courts.
