Jared Willaby, Joe Fischenich, Wyatt Stevens advance as champs; Zach Sprinks moves on as runner-up
Four Windom/Mountain Lake Cobra Wrestling Team members are on to the individual State Class A Tournament following their efforts in the Section 3A Tourney that concluded in Windom on Saturday, February 21.
Three are advancing as section champions in their respective weight classes, and one as section runner-up. Heading to state are champs Wyatt Stevens at 126, Joe Fischenich at 132 and Jared Willaby at 145, along with runner-up Zach Spinks at 106.
* Stevens defeated Minneota’s Hennen for the 126 title, 2-1.
* Fischenich, at 132, downed Meyer of Kerkhoven/Murdock/Sunburg 8-5 to be section champ.
* At 145, Willaby beat Rogers of Adrian 7-1 to be crowned champ.
* In the 106-pound weight class, Spinks was pinned by DeVlaemnick of Minneota at 3:42 in the title match.
Five additional Cobras made it to the section awards stand:
* Alex Borsgard finished third at 113.
* Evan Wiens was fifth at 120.
* Jacob Suess wrestled to sixth at 160.
* Gavin Mutz was fifth at 182.
* Jake Junker earned a fourth-place finish at 195.
The individual and team State Class A Wrestling Tournament (along with Class AA), will be held Thursday, February 26 through Saturday, February 28, at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.
At state, the participating Cobra wrestlers’ first-round opponents look like this:
* Zach Spinks at 106 will face eighth-ranked Phil Skeps of St. Agnes.
* Eighth-ranked Wyatt Stevens will go against Brennan Holien of ACGC (Atwater/Cosmos/Grove City) at 126.
* At 132, sixth-ranked Joe Fischenich will square off with Zach Buseman of Blue Earth.
* Third-ranked Jared Willaby will wrestling eighth-ranked Rylee Anderson of Barnesville.
