King LaMar, Queen Stephanie are royalty – and Saints

The new King and Queen at Butterfield-Odin Public High School (B-OHS) will reign over Homecoming 2014 with double honors – as the royal couple – and as Saints.
King LaMar Sengsouvanh and Queen Stephanie Trejo were crowned during a ceremony held Tuesday evening, September 30, in the school’s big gymnasium.
Additional members of the royal family include Queen Candidates Arely Anaya, Jordyn Connell and Glenda Hector, as well as King Candidates Calvin Miller, Colton Nelson and Cody Steinbrink.
On hand to crown the 2014 royalty were last year’s King and Queen, Austin Friedrich and Monica Munning.
Serving as Little Princess was Sophie Solheid, bringing the queen’s tiara to the stage, while Colin Heffele was the Little Prince, carrying the monarch’s crown into the celebration.
Host and hostess for the evening were Jose Garcia and Michelle Perez.
Hayley Johnson and Wong Lee were escorts for the candidates.
St. James Area Saints Activities Director Les Zellman was at the coronation to present B-OHS members of the football, cross country, volleyball and tennis teams.
The senior high band, under the direction of Dave Stordalen, presented the number, “Wipeout,” while the senior high choir, led by Butterfield-Odin Public School Superintendent Lisa Shellum, shared the song, “Happy Ending.”
Prior to the crowning of the King and Queen, the Homecoming candidates had to complete three levels of competition in a “Minute-To-Win-It” contest.
The first level was “Junk In The Trunk,” with all eight candidates shaking their “trunks” in order to dump out the four ping pong balls packed into a facial tissue box and wrapped around the waist – similar to a fanny pack. It was a tie between three King candidates as to who was able to shake the ping pong balls out the fastest, Colton, Cody and Calvin.
Level two was a couple’s competition, “Penny In The Pantyhose.” A penny was placed in the toe end of each leg of a pair of pantyhose, and, using only one hand, a King candidate and a Queen candidate worked together to grab the respective pennies in their respective legs – and remove them. Queen Candidate Arely Anaya and King Candidate Calvin Miller were the winning pair.
The third and final contest was “Blind Fishing” – again a pairs contest. The King candidates were blindfolded, with the Queen candidates controlling a glazed doughnut at the end of a fishing pole. The winner was the King candidate who had eaten the most from the doughnut in the one-minute time frame. It was King Candidate Cody Steinbrink who downed the most doughnut in the time allowed.
Homecoming skits were returned to the coronation ceremony. One featured Social Studies teacher Dennis Stade as an “inspiring” substitute teacher, rallying the students in the classroom to attend the Saints Homecoming football game Friday night. The second had Band Director Dave Stordalen appear as Iron Maiden’s Bruce Dickinson, leading his special band members, Arely Anaya, Brianna Ringen, Ross Blomgren, Austin Heffele, Dylan Hovdet – and Jose Garcia on cowbell – in their own special rendition of Blue Oyster Cult’s “(Don’t Fear) the Reaper.” Members of the eighth-grade class presented the third skit, spoofing the opponents in Friday’s football game – the Fairmont Cardinals.
The traditional Homecoming Parade will begin at 12:45 p.m. this Friday afternoon, October 3, running from the school to Butterfield’s downtown.
