Thoughts gathered on the FLY

SMAC conducting online survey, study for the Mountain Lake Public School District

On behalf of the Mountain Lake Public School District, the Southwest Marketing Advisory Center (SMAC), located on the campus of Southwest Minnesota State University-Marshall is conducing an online survey and related study on the general attitudes and perceptions on the Flexible Learning Year (FLY) Achievement Initiative.

The goal is to gather thoughts on the initiative’s earlier start date for the school year, along with the earlier ending date of the school year. The results of this study will be used to help determine the practicality of the program.

Completion of the short online survey will help in determining district residents’ general views of the benefits and downfalls of the program in order to assist it in becoming most effective for those wishing to continue the program.

To complete the five-minute survey, go to: www.smsu.edu/go/mlflysurvey and follow the on-screen prompts. Completion of the survey will allow your views to be included in the overall results.

The first FLY Consortium was comprised of 25 school districts in southwest Minnesota. This initial three-year initiative went from the 2010-2011 school year through the 2012-2013 school year.  Click here for map showing districts included in the first FLY initiative.

Twenty-two of those 25 school districts applied and received approval from the Minnesota Commissioner of Education for another three-year flexible learning year term beginning with the 2013-2014 school year. Since that time, Brewster and Round Lake have consolidated, bringing the total number of school districts involved to 21.

In addition to the Mountain Lake Public School District, other public school districts operating under the FLY schedule include Adrian, Comfrey, Edgerton, Hendricks, Hills/Beaver Creek, Ivanhoe, Jackson County Central, Lakeview, Luverne, Lynd, Marshall, Minneota, Redwood Area, Round Lake/Brewster, Russell/Tyler Ruthton, Sleepy Eye, Springfield, Westbrook/Walnut Grove, Windom and Worthington. The three districts from the first FLY Consortium that elected not to continue the program include Canby, Cottonwood and Tracy/Milroy.
