Minnesota State Class A Boys, Girls Golf Tourney draws to close

MLA’s Aaron Walzak ends in a three-way tie for 28th

Eighth-grader Brock Bliese of Mounds Park Academy in St. Paul was crowned the Minnesota State Class A Boys Golf  Tournament champion following the second – and final – day of play today (Wednesday, June 11) at Pebble Creek in Becker. The first day of play was on Tuesday, June 10.

Bliese finished with 150 en route to winning the small-school championship at Pebble Creek in Becker. He edged senior Cordell Weber of Martin County West in Sherburn, who was runner-up at 151. Murray County Central in Slayton junior Adam Christensen was third at 152.

Mountain Lake Area’s (MLA) Aaron Walzak, a senior at Mountain Lake Christian, finished in a three-way tie for 28th, posting a 169 over the course of the two days (44-38, 43-44). He was joined at 169 by Ben Henning of Adrian (38-42, 44,45), a junior and Will Mateffy of Southwest Christian in Chaska (40, 42, 43,44), a senior.

Dawson-Boyd won the team title with a score of 660, 15 better than runner-up United South Central. Finishing seventh was the boys team from Murray County Central with a 702.

On the girls side, also played at Pebble Creek, Legacy Christian Academy of Andover topped the team contest with a score of 718. The Windom Area girls team finished in fourth with 740 team points.

Senior Kelsey Hanefeld was their highest finisher, closing in a three-way tie for seventh with Breann Mertens of BOLD (Bird Island/Olivia/Lake Lillian/Danube), a junior and Sleepy Eye Public sophomore Laura Laffen with a two-day total of 172. Winning the title was senior Christine Piwnica of Southwest Christian in Chaska with a 159 total over the two days. Abby Herding of Westbrook-Walnut Grove, just a sophomore, was second, scoring 168.
