Graduates told to really make a ‘dent’ in the world
Mountain Lake Christian (MLC) Commencement speaker Micah Siebert told the three members of the graduating class during the ceremony on Saturday afternoon, May 24, at the Alliance Church, to really make a “dent” in the world – and utilized visual symbols in the process.
Siebert utilized the hood from a car, painted with a bright blue-and-green image of the world – and hammers of different weights – to drive home the point. “What kind of impact – eternally-speaking – will you have on the world?” he asked the trio – Tyler Dick, Cody Klassen and Whitney Klassen. Siebert invited he graduate up on stage one-at-a-time to wield hammers of different weights – to hit the “world” in order to discover the impact. The five-ounce tacking hammer left a meaningless impact, the one-pound claw hammer left a dent that could be seen, but it didn’t make a whole lot of difference in the world. But, the 10-pound sledgehammer really did leave a “dent” in the world; an eternal impact and something that lasts beyond time.
The graduates opened the exercises with Praise and Worship, and followed up with reflections on their years as classmates.
Whitney Klassen and Cody Klassen shared the vocal duet, “Precious Lord, Take My Hand/Just a Closer Walk With Thee.”
Presenting the three with their diplomas was MLC Board Chair Matt Johnson.
