Shakopee boys basketball player has Mountain Lake roots

Additions: The son of former Mountain Lake and Butterfield residents Kurt and Teresa Hildebrandt – Noah Hildebrandt – was the “sixth man” for the St. Peter Saints boys basketball team that played in the Minnesota State Class 2A Boys Basketball Tournament last weekend. The Saints lost to the Fairmont Caridnals in the opening round. And . . . the son of Mountain Lake native Dawn (Friesen) Gray (and grandson of of Dori Friesen of Mountain Lake) – Nick Gray – was a member of the Eagan Wildcats boys hockey team that recently played in the Minnesota State Hockey Tournament. The Wildcats defeated Duluth East in the 2A quarter-finals, but lost to Edina in the semis.

Evan Hagen, a six-foot sophomore guard for the Shakopee Sabers boys basketball team has Mountain Lake roots. Evan, whose Shakopee team played in the Minnesota State Class AAAA boys basketball semi-finals on Thursday, March 13, lost a heartbreaker in the last “less-than-second” to the Hopkins Royals when Amir Coffey (6’5″ sophomore center and son of former University of Minnesota Gophers men’s basketball player Richard Coffey) hit a bucket for three points from 60 feet. After playing four overtime periods, the Royals won the game and advanced to the finals, tipping Shakopee 49 to 46, in the game at Target Center in Minneapolis.

Shakopee advanced to the semis with a quarter-final defeat of Osseo Orioles, 54 to 51, on Wednesday, March 12, also played in the Target Center, home of the Minnesota Timberwolves professional men’s basketball team.

Evan is the grandson of local residents Jack and Becky Jungas of Mountain Lake, Minnesota and the son of David and Karna (Jungas) Hagen of Shakopee, Minnesota. Karna is a graduate of Mountain Lake Public High School in 1989 and Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minnesota, in 1993.
