Point driven home during February’s ‘I Love to Read Month’ at MLES 

February has been recognized for many years now as “I Love to Read Month” – and this year the tradition continues. At Mountain Lake Public Elementary School (MLES), students and staff have been celebrating books and reading since the end of January – and the special month will even stretch into March.

The grand kick-off for the month was on Friday, January 31 when grades kindergarten-through-six watched the one-act play performance from thespians of Mountain Lake Public High School, “Livin’ de Life,” which detailed day-to-day life in The Briar Patch. Throughout the month, classes, individuals students or groups of students have the opportunity to read in a decorated “Rabbit’s Reading Burrow” in the elementary library. During the first week of February, “Mystery Readers” sharing his or her favorite book read to all classes over the intercom. On Wednesday of this week, a “Teacher Swap” was held with teachers switching to share favorite books with students in another grade and classroom. Additional events will include book buddy reading, teacher and student lunches and a “Guess the Reader” bulletin board.

Dates to note include:

* Friday, February 14 – “Donuts for Dad.”

* Monday, February 24 – “PJ Day.”

* Tuesday, February 25 – “Wear a Shirt From Somewhere You Have Traveled Day.”

* Wednesday, February 26 – “Hat Day.”

“Thursday, February 27 – “Class Color Day.” (kindergarten – yellow; first grade – purple; second-grade – black; third-grade – red, fourth-grade – green; fifth-grade – orange and sixth-grade-maroon.

* Friday, February 28 – “Dress As Your Favorite Book Character Day.”

The s-t-r-e-t-c-h-e-d “I Love to Read Month” will wrap up on Monday, March 3 – Dr. Seuss’ Birthday – with a green eggs and ham breakfast.

The  activities of the month were coordinated by Darcy Snyder, Kristine Friesen, Jenn Fast, Amy Hartzler, Joan Raabe, Martha Standerwick, Mary Brown, Tammy Wolle and Crystal Fast.
