Seven-member team claims second-place small school trophy

The Mountain Lake Christian (MLC) Speech Team took seven team members – and 10 entries – into its Saturday, February 22 meet at Minnesota State University-Mankato (MSU). Three team members – Elijah Stoesz, James Hamm and Caitlyn Smith – double-entered to bring the team total of entries to double digits.
Those seven teammates competed to an excellent showing, and en route, earned the second-place small school trophy.
Medal winners were as follows:
* Elijah Stoesz (junior from Mountain Lake) – second-place in Informative speaking and third-place in Original Oratory.
* Caitlyn Smith (junior from St. James) – fifth-place in Prose and sixth-place in Great Speeches.
* Josh Raabe (sophomore from Mountain Lake) – sixth-place in Humorous Interpretation.
* Danica Dick (freshman from Mountain Lake) – third-place in Storytelling.
Additional MLC competitors included James Hamm (sophomore from St. James) in Creative Expression and Humorous Interpretation, Melissa Lohrenz (sophomore from Mountain Lake) in Poetry and Katelyn Fast (fres in Prose.
The team is coached by Kim Friesen.
Serving as judges at the meet were Scott Smith of St. James and Kirsten Hutchison of Comfrey.
As Coach Friesen shares, “One of the great things about the MSU Varsity Tournament is that the MSU Forensics Team performs some of their competitive pieces and shares info regarding their forensic program and available speech scholarships.”
This Saturday, March 1, the team will compete at a meet at Fairmont Public High School.
The junior high team competes at Marshall Public High School tomorrow (Tuesday, February 25) and at Mankato Loyola on Thursday, March 6.
