Municipal Utilities plant gets a new ‘do’

The Mountain Lake Municipal Utilities Power Plant recently received a new “do” – an upgrade to its windows and front doors with the installation of new energy-efficient frames and glass, courtesy of Fairmont Glass and Signs. The proof of their energy-efficiency could be found during the days of below zero temperatures and way below zero wind chill temps when Electrical Superintendent Ron Melson placed a thermometer at the interior of the “old” windows and 33 degrees Fahrenheit was registered, while, when placed by the new windows, the mercury was at an almost-balmy 58 degrees Fahrenheit.

On July 5, 1935 – at 10 p.m. – the engines of the Mountain Lake Municipal Power Plant were started. Plans for such a facility began in 1933, but it took two years of court battles with the Interstate Power Company before the plant could be operated. That same plant building remains in use today, with additions added over the course of the 78 years.
