Practices, home games played on Munson Field’s gridiron
The gridiron at Munson Field in Mountain Lake was busy “grass” on Saturday, September 24, as the Windom/Mountain Lake (W/ML) Cobras of the Midwest Youth Football League (MYFL) played a pair of league games. The schedule runs until mid-October. MYFL coaches, players and teams compete under the positive motto for athletes of any age – Winning is an attitude, not a score.
The W/ML third- and fourth-grade players faced an Adrian squad, while Harris/Lake Park was the opposing team for the fifth- and sixth-grade Cobras.
Following are recaps of both of the games.
W-ML grades 3/4 face Adrian
Adrian clipped W/ML in the opening grades 3/4 contest, 8-6, all of the scoring coming in the second half. The Dragons scored first in the third quarter, and completed on the two-point conversion.
The Cobras responded in the fourth grader with their own TD on a 15-yard scamper by Noah Holmberg, but failed on the conversion attempt.
W/ML had another opportunity late in the game when they recovered an Adrian fumble, but were unable to take advantage of the turnover.
Coaches for the third- and fourth-grade team are Darren Tietz, along with Jim Holmberg and Garret Wall.
The squad roster includes, third-graders – Avery Fast, Aiden Holmberg, Dev Patel, Ian Richardson and Hayden Tietz, and fourth-graders – Sawyer Carrison, Jake Evers, Bradyn Hansen, Noah Holmberg, Carsen Hopper, Tyson Huls-May, Evan Karschnik, Briley Nickel, Kaleb Nowak, Landen Rempel, Landon Strom, Quintin Tietz, Layne Wall and Cooper Wenner.
Grades 5/6 Cobras take on Harris/Lake Park
In the second game on the day, featuring players in grades 5/6, Harris/Lake Park took the win with them back to Iowa, defeating W/ML, 14-0.
The visitors scored a touchdown and two-point conversion in the first half, and tacked on another TD in the second half, but were stymied by the Cobras in their conversion try.
Coaches for the fifth- and sixth-grade team are Cory Pohlman, who is also director of the W/ML MYFL, and Travis Campbell.
Team members include fifth-graders – Devon Campbell, Matthew Ekstrom, Joey Faber, Chase Jensen, Taylor Remme, Tucker Renquist and Andrew Vetsouvanh, and sixth-graders – Peyton Banks, Ayden Berghorst, Treyton Duerksen, Theo Evers, Damion Pohlman and Devyn Rempel.
